Do you spend most of your day struggling to stay awake? It isn’t just tiredness; individuals with sleep apnea can spend eight hours in bed and feel exhausted all day.

The sleep disorder affects between five and 20 percent of adults. At our dental office, we offer treatment for sleep apnea in Suffern. Contact our office for an appointment if you would like to learn about how oral appliance therapy can help you get refreshing sleep that provides you with the energy you need to get though a busy day.

Do I Have Sleep Apnea?

It is a sleep disorder with the most common type being obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). With OSA, the soft tissue in your throat or your tongue obstructs your upper airway, causing you to stop breathing. Your body will wake you up very briefly and you’ll gasp for air. This can happen five or more times an hour depending on the severity of your condition. While you won’t remember these incidents, they can have serious health consequences besides making you feel tired every day because OSA is constantly interrupting your sleep. Unfortunately, many individuals with OSA go undiagnosed. There may be no one around to hear their loud snoring or observe them stop breathing. People also attribute feeling sleepy all day to other reasons.

What Sleep Apnea Symptoms Are the Most Common?

While people often associate loud, disruptive snoring and choking noises a person makes while sleeping with OSA, there are symptoms present during the daytime which are just as common, including:

  • Excessive daytime drowsiness
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Being irritable
  • Short-term memory problems
  • Are There General Sleep Apnea Causes?
    Typical causes of OSA include:
  • Being obese or overweight
  • Carrying extra weight around your neck
  • Genetics
  • Male gender, although women after menopause are just as likely to have OSA
  • Chronic nasal congestion
  • Smoking

Where Can I Find Treatment for Sleep Apnea in Suffern?

People with mild OSA can frequently benefit from losing extra weight, quitting smoking, and sleeping on their side. Our dental office offers oral appliance therapy (OAT) for patients who suffer from mild-to-moderate OSA. OAT can relieve the symptoms of OSA and let you get an uninterrupted night’s sleep with a mandibular advancement device which will move your lower jaw slightly forward. You’ll find you have much more energy and it is easier to concentrate. Surgery is also an option for people with severe OSA, although it is usually the last resort. Call our office today schedule your appointment.

Treatment is essential since OSA has consequences besides annoying others with your load snoring. You could fall asleep at the wheel or cause an accident at work from daytime sleepiness. The lack of oxygen, which occurs when you stop breathing, puts a strain on your heart and increases your risk of developing heart disease or high blood pressure.

Dental Appliances

What Is Wearing an Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea Like?

An oral appliance is easy to wear. It goes over your upper and lower teeth and it has a hinge so you can talk. You put it in at night, before falling asleep, and then remove it once you wake up. Your dentist will have the appliance custom-made for you from a mold of your teeth so it will fit well. It will take a short while to get used to wearing the appliance and our dentist will adjust it for comfort and effectiveness. He or she will also show you how to maintain your oral appliance at home.

What’s the Average Price for a Sleep Apnea Mouth Guard?

There isn’t an average cost since there are different brands of mouth guards available. Your dentist will consider the options and choose the one which is best for you. Your health insurance coverage for OAT will also affect the amount you pay.

Is Oral Appliance Therapy Beneficial?

Yes, OAT can conveniently help you reach your goal of keeping your airway open at night. Your other option, which is also effective, is using a CPAP machine. While you can simply place your sleep apnea mouthpiece in your mouth at night, CPAP machines use a mask to provide continuous airflow to help your airway remain open. They are not as portable as an oral appliance and some patients don’t like wearing a mask. An oral appliance is also easier to keep clean. If you would like to know if you can benefit from oral appliance therapy, please contact our office for an appointment.

Will My Dental Insurance Cover an Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea in Suffern?

OSA is a medical condition and if you have health insurance, it may cover the cost of your appliance. Contact your health insurance provider for details about your coverage.
